Local SEO for contractors: how to rank in the towns you serve

Local SEO means showing up when people near you search for what you do. You don't need to become an expert. Most of the gains come from a handful of basics done well and kept up.

How Google decides which contractors to show

For local searches, Google looks at three broad things: how relevant you are to the search, how close you are to the person searching, and how well known and trusted your business seems. You can't change your location, but you can make your website and Google listing far more relevant and trustworthy than most competitors.

1. Give every service its own page

If you only have one page that lists "plumbing, drains, water heaters, sump pumps", Google has a hard time ranking you for any of them. A dedicated page for each main service, explaining the problem, how you fix it and the areas you cover, gives you a real chance to show up for each search.

2. Name the places you work

Mention the towns and neighbourhoods you serve on your site, and add a short page for your main areas if you cover a wide region. Make each area page genuinely useful, with local details, jobs you've done there or travel times. Pages that just swap the town name in and out don't help and can hurt.

3. Get the basics right on every page

  • A unique page title that includes the service and area, such as "Water Heater Repair in Oakville | Your Business".
  • A short page description that makes people want to click.
  • One main heading that says what the page is about.
  • Your business name, phone and service area written the same way everywhere, on your site and your listings.
  • Fast loading and easy reading on phones.

4. Build trust signals

Reviews on your Google Business Profile, a few quality directory listings (trade associations, local business groups, your supplier's dealer directory if they have one) and links from local organisations you work with all help Google trust your business. Sponsoring a local sports team or charity often comes with a link from their site, and it's good for the community too.

5. Tell Google your site exists

Add your site to Google Search Console (free) and submit your sitemap. It helps Google find your pages faster and shows you which searches you already appear for, so you know what's working.

How long it takes

Local SEO is slow and steady. A new website often takes a few months before it ranks well, and competitive cities take longer. That's why it pays to start early, and to keep a second source of leads, like referrals or outreach, while your rankings grow.

Questions

Can I do local SEO myself?

Yes. Most of it is setting up your Google Business Profile properly, giving each service its own page, asking for reviews and keeping your details consistent. It takes time more than skill.

Should I pay for Google Ads instead?

Ads bring calls straight away but stop the moment you stop paying. SEO takes longer but keeps working. Many contractors use ads for urgent, high-value jobs while their organic rankings build.

Do I need a blog for SEO?

Not necessarily. For most trades, strong service pages, area pages and reviews matter more than regular blog posts. A few genuinely helpful articles can help, but an abandoned blog doesn't.
